MacBook Battery Swelling: Why It Happens and What to Do

If your MacBook's trackpad has started clicking oddly, feels like it's lifted slightly on one side, or the bottom case no longer sits flat on a desk, the most common cause is a swollen battery pushing against the case from underneath. It's a genuinely common failure in laptops a few years old, and it's more urgent than it might seem.

Lithium-ion batteries can swell as they age, particularly if they've spent a lot of time at very high or very low charge, or been exposed to heat over time. It's a gradual chemical process, not something caused by one specific incident in most cases.

A swollen battery is under physical pressure and, in rarer cases, can pose a fire risk if punctured or damaged further. Continuing to use a laptop with a visibly swollen battery - especially pressing down on the case or trackpad - isn't worth the risk. Stop using it and get it looked at.

Removing a swollen battery safely requires care, since the swelling itself makes the pack more fragile to handle. We use genuine Apple parts for Apple devices.
