Laptop Keyboard Not Working? Here's What's Usually Wrong

Laptop keyboard problems range from one stubborn key to the whole thing going unresponsive, and the pattern of what's failing is usually a good clue to what's actually wrong before we even open the laptop.

This is most often debris or a spilled drink residue under the specific keys affected, or a worn-out key mechanism if it's the same keys you use most (space, E, A). It doesn't necessarily mean the whole keyboard needs replacing - sometimes a careful clean resolves it.

Keyboards are wired in a grid, so a dead row or column often points to a ribbon cable or connector issue rather than the keys themselves failing individually. This is a more specific hardware fault than isolated dead keys and usually does need a technician to trace.

This is typically either a disconnected or damaged ribbon cable (common after the laptop's been opened before, or dropped), or liquid damage that's affected the whole keyboard assembly at once. Liquid damage in particular can also affect the motherboard underneath, which is why we check beyond just the keyboard itself in this case.

We test the keyboard, its connection, and (where liquid damage is a possibility) the board underneath before recommending a repair. That check is free if you go ahead with the repair.
